Once known as the “richest hill on Earth” thanks to a multibillion-dollar mining industry, Butte (population 33,854) is the “big city” on the drive. This rambling route leads over mountains, across the Continental Divide, through forests, and along blue-ribbon trout streams, including the world-renowned Madison River.
